A Visit to Omaha’s Adolescent GYN Clinic

Teens, especially teen girls, are faced with body image issues, pressures from boyfriends and their social circles, questions about their changing bodies and the emotional ebbs and flows that can occur.

Knowing there can be gynecologic issues specific to teens, the Methodist Physicians Clinic Women’s Center opened Omaha’s first adolescent gynecology clinic.

A teen-friendly environment

Appointments for teens are available throughout the week. During these designated times, the clinic is restructured to meet the needs of younger patients, with longer appointment times to address the specific questions and concerns of adolescent patients.

While a parent may be present for the initial introduction and any necessary physical exams, girls are encouraged to honestly discuss concerns about their physical and psychological health and wellness, their menstrual periods and any sexual activity with their provider.

After talking with the nurse practitioner or physician, the patient may have an exam to ensure general physical health. An external genital exam may also be performed, but often, an internal pelvic exam or Pap test is not necessary unless there is pain or abnormal bleeding.
